Artist of the Week: Steven Holl

I stumbled upon Steven Holl when I was sorting books for my boss at the Nelson-Atkins. I find myself being drawn to archtiects and their sketches as I work with form and structure (brilliant connection, right?)
His drawings are beautiful and well designed and his buildings are so elegant and clean. The last image is 30 years of sketchbooks collected. What a nut!

Happiness!!

Reed Anderson made my year!! He really did. He is the most amazing teacher and if you haven't taken him, you should. He gave me this book he helped make because he knew I was interested in Kelmscott Press and the Arts and Crafts.

It really feels good to have him on my team as a student. He constantly lifts you up and makes you feel valid as an artist, a writer and a human. I hope everyone feel a connection with some teacher at some point in their life.

I only wish he could be my full time mentor!

The Spencer!

Our History of Printmaking class went on a field trip to the Spencer Museum of Art to look at prints. And it was amazing. Every printmaker at KCAI should take Reed Anderson's class or EVERY one of his classes. He is amazing.

We looked at the prints then went to lunch where I met Lance! He is working on an AMAZING project with the architect Moshe Sardef who I found online a few months ago and fell in love with. Imagine researching an architect then finding out he does projects in the town you where you live?

I totally put my foot in my mouth by referring to the lucky students who get to work with his as jerks because I am so jealous they actually got to meet him and work with him.

If you get a chance check out Lance's work especially the logos for the Matter Factory!

Jan Comes to Visit!

Magic happens when best friends meet up. Jan made the unbearable heat of the city so much easier when she came to visit!

Being home makes me want to do nothing. I think of getting up early but I sleep until 10 everyday.

I leave the sketchbook open but go out with my boyfriend instead.

Bad, bad, bad.

California makes me want to go to the beach. Time to change it. Time to get back to work.

DONE!

One year of school is officially done. I don't know how I feel.

I am tired, but satisfied.

I finished classes, mainted my GPA, held down a two jobs, got the internship at the Nelson as well as my amazing internship at Cara and Cabezas. Next year will just be busier.

Thank God for Linda, Chris, Martin, Allison and Matthew. They all helped make the bad time fun and the good times great!

Forecast: Thunderstorms

And blog updates. With no computer and no time there will be no updates. But things are starting to slow down and it is time to get some work done.

work work work...

Since I have been busy with school researching for papers I have not had much time in the lab. But I have been doing a lot of research for idea that will inspire me. I will post what I have been working on soon but in the mean time I thought I would start posting things I come across that inspire me or make me laugh or just make me happy.

oops...

So today at work I got to go home early... only to get stuck in the parking lot. I went to make a U-turn and slid down the hill.

Thank God I have a burly roommate and there are some awesome boys at my school. They pushed my car uphill and saved my day!

The ladies in the office said they laughed at me until they realized the car had California license plates and it was me inside.

One of the ladies informed me, "Don't drive or park in ice."

Words to live by?

not to get what we can from life."

Abolish Three Strikes Poster

It dawned on me...

And I am still doing the same imagery. Over and over. I'm trying to break out of it and I got a lot of wise words from multiple sources. So I have been working on these little portrait series when I am too busy to print.

Project!

Two book project with Jan!

Jan sent me the most delightful package with two books inside. She had decorated one and requested that I decorate the other.

I'm very excited about this and so happy that Jan thought of me.

As for this semester I am going to have a lot of projects to balance with writing papers.

I am applying for a show that will set up in a parking garage structure downtown for one night.

I also wanted to make some small books since my class last semester was more about going past the standard book structure and all the sophomores are running around making these awesome books.

I have a lot of ideas for prints and I grained my arm so sore I had to take pills for it (which has never happened before, but I have also never tried to knock out three stones in a couple of hours... I usually space them out.)

I have my camera and I am going to try to keep my work updated more often so I can get some advice from my friends.

Advice and critiques ALWAYS welcome.

Mmmm....

Just to catch you up I thought I would post some of my work from last semester. They are random pictures from cards I made to prints from the middle and end of the semester.

Countdown begins...

Beach Trip, Laguna Beach

... I only have one more day in California and it makes me so sad. As much as I love school I really, really miss my family, friends and Michael. This is going to be hard.

I'll Be Home for Christmas...

Being home for a month has been really, really nice. And relaxing. And warm. And fattening. My parents cook the best food, I have nothing to do and 35 degree weather is amazingly warm.

I am just praying that I don't adjust and freeze and die when I go back to KCMO.

Being in California makes me miss it so much. Just another year and half. Just another year and a half.
